Sustainable travelling

We all know that travelling can be a carbon emission bonanza, particularly air travel, so we have put down some ideas on how we can make travelling more sustainable.

STAYCATION

Stay where you are! The best way to be sustainable is to see what you got on your doorstep. Here in Dorset we are lucky to LIVE IN A HOLIDAY DESTINATION! So why bother going anywhere else? There are such a wide range of things to do in our area that in reality we don’t need to leave the county. Check out the Visit Dorset website

  • How about going camping in the New Forest or on the Purbecks. We guarantee you that the children will have as fond memories of a family camping trip as they would if you went abroad somewhere. Check out visit England's website to get some ideas.

  • Or for a different more magical camping experience, why not try Champing or church camping! Yes indeed it’s a thing! Check out their website

TRAVEL BY TRAIN

If we are to go somewhere else, consider the option of taking the train rather than flying. There are so many places we can get to by train within and from the UK. Why fly to Manchester when we got a 4 hours direct intercity train from Bournemouth. By the time you have travelled to and from the airport you’ve spent 4 hours anyway.

INTERRAIL

Going to Europe, have you looked into buying an interrail pass? We are so lucky to have the Eurostar train in London, allowing us to travel to Brussel, Paris, Amsterdam, Lille within a couple of hours only. And from there you can get to the rest of Europe north or south. You can travel to Germany within a day, you can even get as far as to Copenhagen within a day, as one of our wastebusters experienced.

FLYING SUSTAINABLY

But its not realistic that we all will be able to stop flying tomorrow, in the global world we live in people are dependent on flying for work, and if you cant do a conference call or take an extra day or two to take the train instead, there are measures we can take to minimise the damage:
  • Take DIRECT flights only.
  • Take PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO THE AIRPORT or car share if many of you are travelling.
  • NO LIQUIDS IN HAND LUGGAGE (avoid the plastic bags at security or give it back to them after use).
  • BRING YOUR OWN keep cup, bottle & food on the flight as flight food comes in disposable plastic
  • CARBON OFFSET your flight. There are websites that let you offset/ pay for the footprints of your flight, and the money will go into sustainable projects around the world. Check out Carbonfootprint's Website

REDUCE

Even if all of us just reduced the amount of flying we did it would make a huge impact on the environment and the future for our children.

When enough of us make the change, it will be noticed.
